Number of ads showing on homepage

How can I modify the number of ads that are shown on the homepage?

I've looked in main.php but cannot see any specific number...

If you mean the recent ads at the bottom, there is a setting  from the admin panel
in the General section called "Number of recent items displayed at home"

Is default to 10, changing this should give you the change you are looking for...
