[Solved] External Mail server setup (not mandrill)
« on: October 21, 2015, 08:08:13 am »
Hello,
I'd like to use some other external mail server, like Mailgun or Sendgrid to handle my mails. I know we have a plugin for Mandrill, but Mandrill is not free anymore. And gmail is not the right choice here.

Anyone knows how to setup an external mail server for Osclass?
Thanks

Well, if you got hosting you also got email, why not use that instead of some external dependency?

Hello, though my centos 6 is preinstalled with Postfix, but i'd prefer to not go with it. Keeping the possibility of high traffic, I want the email load to be out of my server, and most people do advise to either keep a separate server for emails, or go with an external SMTP. DigitalOcean, and so many other providers recommend the same. You can google it, and im sure you'll find it not recommended to handle your own emails.

Plus spam handling is a pain, infact i just spammed myself just by sending my recovery password twice.  For these hassles, i'd want to use an external SMTP. Any help would be appreciated :)

I see, well setup depends on the service you're using ofcourse ie. GMail has a little different setup than other services.
In case of Mailgun you should follow their instructions: https://documentation.mailgun.com/quickstart-sending.html#how-to-start-sending-email

It's not a simple plug and play, each special smtp host has it's own api/config so like with Mandrill Gunmail would need a specific Gunmail Osclass plugin that handles all mail traffic.

Eric

Found a solution.
What we can do here is - we can use Postfix as the base, and then configure it to use an external SMTP relay.

You may configure it using this tutorial - https://www.linode.com/docs/email/postfix/postfix-smtp-debian7

Cheers!

That is a cool solution!
I use sendmail myself which would probably also be able to use some external smtp host.
I like this solution way better than trying to look for a solution on application level, nice catch 8)

Yes haha,
I'm so glad i found this. I literally spent days looking for the right thing. If one is serious about the website, he MUST use an external provider. Postfix and such utilities are good, but not as good in handling spams... all my mails were going into spam.

My emails are good now, and all is perfect without any load on my server  8)
Cheers!

We are serious and we handle our mail ourselves using our provider state of the art mail server(s).

We have no load, very very little spam, and all is ok.

For Osclass we handle about 2000 emails per day and around 500 for our Wordpress. Using two high end shared plans.

It  actually about how talented is (mostly) your hosting provider (mostly) and yourself.

Systems do act strange at times - and it's best to be on the safer side. Your setup works well for you - GOOD! I was getting too much spam from a fresh Postfix installation. And the entire internet recommends using either a dedicated server for emails, or an external server.  So please don't take this personally, and don't underline the words "being serious".

I remember your first comment when you said "you don't know anything". You may be hero member, but if you use ill words, it  makes you look very small.
