link on sub category in two main categories
« on: July 17, 2011, 03:20:43 pm »
Hello,

it would be great/how to put a link to one sub category in multiples main one?

like :

i have "clothes for children"

& i want this category to be filled by default in : "Clothes" with "women, men, child, babies"

then i wish to have it also filled in :

- Children & babys

and not to have "two category called "clothes for children"

Hi HimSelf,

We thought of develop a "tag" plugin, which is more or less what you are asking for. What do you think about it? You simply can add tags to your add (user defined or admin defined tags), but they will not could be ordered...

i hate tag system, even more when it create 2 page because it create duplicate content for google.
tag is good to put related items together, but not to be visible by users.

in this case it didn't help because tag should be used for brands or products type.

like :

apple can be used as a tag in :

- computer (macbook)
- mp3 player (ipod, itouch, etc...)
- video player (ipod,itouch, etc...)
- phones (iphone)

but :

what i look is to link category together.

i can not put "clothes", as a tag, it's my category.
i can not put "children", as a tag, it's my category.

The perfect way for me is to add my 2 roots categories.

then to add :

clothes for children, as a child category of "Clothes" and to link it as a virtual category in "Children" or other cat ( checkbox list or something else ).

like that we have only 1 id  & 1 url for two or three categories.

no duplicate content, no need do add item twices.

Hi HimSelf,

I fully understand your problem but (there's always a but...) it's not as easy as it seems to develop/design it correctly.

At some process of OSClass, we're required to know the "father" of a given category (Let's say you have "Father" category, and a sub category called "Child", let's add your "virtual" category and called it "Mother" )
If we ask now for the parent of Child, we should return Father & Mother, but,... what should we display in for example the breadcrumbs plugins? (It displays something like "Your site >> Father >> Child"), now,... should it Father instead of Mother? Or it's better to display Mother?

Even more, You will be able to make mother a child of Father
example :
Father >> Mother & Child,
Mother >> Child

Of course, everything is possible, but this is a bit complicated (if you want to make it flexible and useful for several users). We'll work on that, we want to make a great software.

My idea for tags, is that you will not have categories, only one. For example "yoursite", that category will be always hidden and instead you will use admin-defined tags. Again it's not the best solution and we're open to suggestions and help. If OSClass is not useful for you, it's not useful for us! So we want to work on it.

Thanks!

I think that your suggestion is more a keyword system where you can select some filters, keywords and generate an static url that redirect to your search?

@CONEJO :

you can always call the father ( breadcrumb, listing, etc... )

AND IF MOTHER EXIST then add the mother to the list. ( better call it sister :p )

@juan : no definitely not, keyword is not what i'm looking for, & keywords are bad for SEO !

why not a select box?
that way you can pick where to show and will make the live easy for users with some control
like:
select main Categories
then
select sub categories under the main ones.
