Suggestion for phone number privacy anti-spam protection
« on: June 16, 2012, 05:54:55 am »
When posting a listing, it would be cool if there were an optional box to enter a phone number. When the listing is posted, the text (phone #) is converted to an image and shown as an image at bottom of listing description. Would this be a good privacy measure? Many people are worried about phone & email harvesting by spammers...you can see that on craigslist many people are spelling out their phone numbers instead of using number digits. for example, instead of 555-5555, they put five five five - five five five five.

Good idea or bad? I guess this could be a plugin? Maybe this same thing could work for protecting email addresses too when people want to show it in the listing.

There are many "text to image" scripts and online services that can do this sort of thing.

Simply use cufon for that field. I think twitter theme has it.

Hi zealotry:

Thanks. You mentioned that the twitter theme has cufon ability? Where in the theme/code can it be found? I think your suggestion is great. Any idea on how to implement cufon into a phone number field when users post new items? I know there is a feature to add custom fields, but I'm not sure how to add (code) to affect any given custom field.
