Suggestions on VPS hosting choice
« on: March 20, 2013, 03:38:26 pm »
Hu guys,

I will go ahead and buy myself a VPS hosting plan for 2 (5 max) Osclass installations.

Not sure what i shall be looking for as server technical specs ? How much ram for example ?

The current two websites i will convert to Osclass are about 1000 page views per day each but they are getting around 20% more each 3 months .....

If anyone has real world Osclass on VPS and cares to share his opinion ...

Thanks

I will suggest Linode (Unmanaged)

I have never had to use their support.

You are able to reboot your server anytime you want but I've never had to do that either.

You pick your OS (linux) of course its command line only but very easy to deploy

even if you don't know anything about linux command line.

Yes if you sign up using my link above I will get some off of my hosting.

Start out with the min. (512 ram I think) and work your way up. You can pay by the month.

The "unmanaged" part is scary. I'm a Microsoft guy and i have no idea about any linux OS. I can just find my way to php. And that's all for any non windows OS.

@Aficionado

I thought the same thing before I switched.

You start out with an empty box and build from the ground up.

I will never go back to shared or managed hosting, I'm in full control.

What is your budget for the project?

I run Cut Above Host

I know what you mean about being a MS only guy. I was all the way until about 2000 when my IIS server was getting hammered by Chinese hackers.
Nothing could protect it as it was a flaw in the IIS server as I recall I was running IIS4 on a Windows 2000 server.
It was at that point I moved my hosting infrastructure to a FreeBSD server and have been using other servers since.
Currently I am endorsing CentOS since it is the most favorite platform for running a cPanel server.

Thanks guys for the replies, still my questions have not been answered.

What does need OSCLASS to work decently ? What kind of ram, cpu, for 5 websites and (let's say) 5000 page views per day.

I see many VPS plans offer many distros, what to select ?

Thanks

I had one offer for VPS, 1 Core, 1024 MB ram.

CentOS 6.2 & Ubuntu 10.04 & Plesk (Cpanel also an option).

Also the said i could use newer Ubuntu server os or Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

Not sure what i need of all these ...

I would go with CentOS and install cPanel.

I would think you would do fine with a minimum of 1GB RAM.

There really isn't any hard fast rules that you can go by.

The plugins you use as well as how many ads you have in your classifieds will also influence how much RAM you have to have to run the site.

I have over the years heard many people say they run sites fine on a VPS with only 1GB RAM though.

Hi,

Im looking also a VPS hosting and i found this.

http://www.edis.at/de/server/linux-vserver/oesterreich/vrs-basic/

Would this be enough for 1-5000 Views a day or not? Sorry im new with VPS, i know about Webhosting a site but not a Classified Site hosting on a VPS. Do i have to install something to use Osclass or is it ready for install. Please help me. Im really confused. Im looking for months now to find a good Hosting for my Osclass project.

Is there anything i should know about VPS, Guidelines for noobs? Any information would help. Thx

Kit

I wouldn't want to try using a VPS like that because it says the CPU is shared. I would look for a VPS that has a dedicated CPU.
To run the site software you mainly just have to have PHP/Apache/MySQL installed. So just choose a LAMP server image and you are good to go.

I know when you get a server from http://www.cutabovehost.com/ then you get basic management which helps in situations like this.

Well I've never used anything else other than 1and1 and they never really let me down with their services, so that's the one I'll recommend using (plus their prices are quite sweet too!)
