how to go about adding icons into the gategorys on home page

I would like some information if possible to how to add icons to the category's on the home page next to...for sale..services..ect  ( so there is a small icon next to the category name )
hopefully someone might have a link to some icons they have used in the past, if not no worries

then I just need to find out what file to edit header.php or the style sheet ect. step by step if possible
I've seen these icons on some sites and they look pretty good
any information on this would be grateful indeed
