IMPORTANT: No news is good news! [Current state of Osclass]
« on: February 12, 2014, 11:47:36 am »
French say "pas de nouvelles, bonnes nouvelles", if there're no news it means everything is alright!

Some of you have message me worried about that it's been a time without any new update from Osclass, while that's true, there's no need to worry. Please read.

As you already know, Osclass is mainly developed by a very small a resources-limited team, it has out-growth our expectations. Osclass is not dead and we continue to develop it. We've been working on a few new features that are quite complicated to develop, a new routes system that will let you modify ANY url on your site (and create new ones), which unifies it with the plugins url system and display a nice url even if you don't have permalinks enabled. We're changing the themes/template system completely (don't worry! it will be compatible with your current themes!) but it will reduce the amount of work needed to modify/create a new theme!

On the other hand, we have been working on several "side-projects": market, translations, tests, deploy-process, some changes in the forums,... There's a lot of work here that probably is not visible, but trust me it's needed.

We know we've been quiet for a while, we know that Osclass' core development has slowed a little but we're still working on it (and even doing more hours than before). We hope we finish those side-tasks soon so we could get back to the core, which is the fun part of Osclass.

If you love Osclass as much as we do and want to contribute to the project, please read this : http://doc.osclass.org/Contributing_to_OSClass (a small guide on how to contribute). There's no need for you to know how to program, you could help us translating it, reporting bugs or even giving new ideas for features.

If you're more technically inclined, please do something from this list : https://github.com/osclass/Osclass/issues?milestone=25&page=1&state=open It will be easier for me to review already planned features than new features.

Nice to hear all that.

I hope you take into serious consideration the extremely poor default SEO of Osclass. And SEO improvements were promised and blogged a long time ago and nothing happened. And i'm not talking about anything deep exotic SEO, just the basics. Right now Osclass page titles for example are not offering any SEO. For example in a multi-country setup, going to an ad page, there is NO information about the LOCATION of the listing (Country, Area, City). Same goes for the related page Breadcrumbs.

Also while internal and structural changes and enhancements are good and wanted, i would like to URGE you to finish basic functions first, like Ads expiration repost and ads expiration selection by the user.

Finally the admin part of Osclass could be improved to make the life of an admin easy. Right now it is not. And i'm not talking about an Osclass installation that after installed ...  then it is  neglected to whatever ads are posted. I'm talking about serious installations. Personally i spend quite a while to maintain and check the posted ads daily, and i think there are several ways to minimize this.

Again many thanks for the Osclass.

@Aficionado

A SEO expert is currently reviewing Osclass and making some reports.

As I said several times now, ads expiration should be enchanced via plugins, why? because there're so many posibilities there that we thought it's better to do it with plugins instead of filling the admin with thousand of different and not so usual options. Just as an example, we should offer the possibility of ad repost or not, if we do, then we the admin has to choose if the ad will be posted with a different ID or with the old one, should the publication date be modified to the new one or just the expiration date be delayed? should the modification date be modified too? How many times an ad could be re-posted? should the user pay for the repost? What happen is there's some pay-per-publish plugin enabled?...

Any ideas will be welcomed, so instead of saying the "admin could be improved", if you could give us specific issues and details we'll try to do our best.

I think you are complicating things, without the need to be complicated.

1. A user registers and wants to post his ad.

2. But his item must go within 10 days or so. He has NO way to select the ad duration or even close to his needs. An other user wants to post an ad for his service and select a long-time duration. He can't.

3. The user's ad is about to expire. He gets a notice about it. He must delete the ad and post it again. I don't really understand why he simply can't repost it. I don't see all those options you mention. Why different id ? Why limit how many times he reposts it ? Why all those complicated things.

And ask your self this: Why ALL (*ALL*) classifieds scripts do have all that ? Are they more clever or better ? I don't think so.

Well SEO experts do not exist actually.

Basic SEO (aka Google SEO) is very easy and simple. It is implemented in Google Blogs.

No need for an "expert".

Also i would suggest to check "g u m t r e e.com" and see how the use their Breadcrumbs, their regions and states, and their page titles.

Nothing fancy or hard to do. Pretty easy.

Anyway, again all those are not complaints, just friendly suggestions.

It's hard to be patient and I am an experienced impatient person  :-X

Nevertheless, let's be happy about this news, I do understand there is a lot of work involved in the changes mentioned and it is all done for free. (But please hurry!)  ;D

Just my opinion, to implement posting ads step by step like http://ahmedabad.quikr.com/post-classifieds-ads/select-category/
From select category -> and option to make the ads as premiums
and if possible let user when posting ads give tags to the ads :)
